Trailing Arbutus (Epigaea repens), also known as Mayflower, is a charming evergreen groundcover native to North America. It produces clusters of soft pink to white, sweetly fragrant flowers in early spring, often before other woodland plants awaken. With its leathery green leaves and low, spreading habit, it’s ideal for shaded woodland gardens, rock gardens, and naturalized areas. A true symbol of early spring beauty and resilience.

🌱 Germination & Growing Information:

  • Soil: Acidic, humus-rich, well-drained woodland soil (similar to azalea mix)

  • Temperature: Prefers cool to mild conditions (15–20°C / 59–68°F)

  • Pre-treatment: Seeds may need cold stratification for 2–3 months

  • Planting Depth: Sow seeds on the surface, gently press into soil (do not cover)

  • Germination Time: 2–3 months or longer; patience required

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, never soggy

  • Light: Partial to full shade

  • Fertilizer: Use a light acid fertilizer or leaf mulch annually

  • Spacing: 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart

  • Height: Low-growing, 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) tall

  • Blooming Season: Early to mid-spring

  • Special Care: Avoid root disturbance; prefers cool, shady, undisturbed areas
